Abstract
Two types of atmospheric conditions encountered in Penang is monitored and compared using a ground-based Lidar. The differences between the hazy atmospheric condition and clear atmosphere is identified using the Lidar. The extinction coefficient and aerosol optical depth (AOD) of both atmospheric conditions are compared. The most distinctive characteristic is the large contrast in values of the extinction coefficient and AOD. The thickness of the planetary boundary layer (PBL) is also different with thickness of 2 km and more on a hazy day and 0.8 km to 1 km thickness for a clear atmosphere. Comparison of these two types of atmospheric conditions gives a more thorough understanding of the atmosphere in Penang.
