Abstract
This paper identifies the issues of using the bus/branch model for operations studies for current hour, next hour and future hours. Need for node/breaker model for contingency analysis is discussed. Major improvements needed to bus/branch model for contingency analysis in the area of contingency definition and contingency analysis is presented. Need to model Remedial Action Schemes (RAS) independent of contingency definition when using node/breaker model is discussed. Need to model the field sectionalizing breakers are discussed using the node/breaker model. Why bus branch/model user interface will not work and need to improve user interface when using the node/breaker model is discussed. Solution to improve performance using distributed computing is presented. The improvements suggested has been implemented and tested and in production for more than a year for a 8000 bus, 40,000 node Bonneville Power Administration system.
