Abstract :
Improving energy consumption in transmission mechanism and reliability of links are two important and challenging issues which are the focus of designing the physical layer of wireless sensor networks (WSN) in order to enhance their lifetime. Energy consumption of wireless sensor devices depends on various parameters but especially on transmission distance, channel conditions, modulation techniques and channel coding strategy. Therefore, this paper investigates the appropriate combination of modulation scheme with error control codes (ECCs) for wireless sensor data transmission. The performance of Gaussian Minimum Shift Keying (GMSK) modulation with channel coding is evaluated and compared to Minimum Shift Keying (MSK) technique based on the BER (Bit Error Rate) and power consumption under AWGN (Additive White Gaussian Noise) and Rayleigh fading channels. A deep campaign of simulations reveals that GMSK scheme with Golay coding strategy under AWGN channel condition outperforms the other combination of coding method from the energy consumption minimization perspective.
