Abstract :
The Academy for Software Engineering (AFSE) is a public high school in New York City focused on Computer Science and Software Engineering. NYC high schools recruit from middle schools in order to attract students. In its first and second year AFSE´s recruitment yielded a small number of girls. After consultations with NCWIT, AFSE changed their recruitment materials and practices and saw increased recruitment numbers of girls, both in absolute numbers and in increased growth in overall percentage of students. We present the interventions used by AFSE to increase the number of girls applying to the school.
