            Abstract :
The paper presents a new small planar antenna and describes how to effectively employ it in an electrically dense array. The antenna is composed of 2-layer electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) cells and is a thin version of the formerly introduced thick self-excited EBG resonator antenna. The effect of mutual coupling on the input impedance of the adjacent elements in a sample array is demonstrated, and a technique to suppress this effect, using a high impedance (HI) surface, is applied. Simulation results show that the application of proposed high-performance elements and the HI surface maintains the balance in the feed network and the symmetry in the broadside pattern, even at the presence of high-dielectric substrates.
