Abstract :
This talk describes the theory and implementation of dynamically biased APDs for nulling the avalanche buildup time in direct-detection optical communications. The technique is applicable to any APD and can enable operation at data rates that exceed the traditional limits dictated by the gain-bandwidth product associated with statically biased APDs.
