Abstract :
Dynamic operation of a power system requires adaptive tuning of power system stabilizers (PSSs) in order to damp out low frequency oscillations under different grid conditions. PSS parameter tuning in a large interconnected system is an important and challenging problem to avoid system instability. This paper presents mean variance optimization (MVO) algorithm for PSS tuning at a control center utilizing remote synchrophasor data. The approach is illustrated on a two-area four-machine power system simulated on a real-time digital simulator (RTDS). Time domain simulation results show improved oscillation damping with PSSs tuned with MVO. Furthermore, comparison of MVO with particle swarm optimization is presented and it is observed that MVO converges faster.
