Abstract :
The global mega urbanization and impacts in the decade of the 2000s are investigated under an interdisciplinary science research participated by 25 institutions and agencies from five countries in North America and Europe. Among multiple components of the research, the Dense Sampling Method with the Rosette Transform enables a new method to process coarse-resolution satellite scatterometer data into a 1-km posting to delineate urban extent on the basis of physical infrastructures, rather than arbitrary boundaries from political or administrative definitions. Scatterometer data from the QuikSCAT satellite are processed for all 29 mega cities across the world. Results reveal an urban mega agglomeration of connected cities along a swath extending over 450 km from the Pacific coast to the internal land.
