Abstract
The bio-physical response of South China Sea (SCS) to Typhoon Nari (2013) in was investigated using multi-satellites remote sensing data. A combined dataset of ocean surface winds from the ASCAT, the sea surface temperature (SST) from Remote Sensing System (RSS), ocean color products from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on Terra, and sea level anomaly (SLA) from AVISO are used to analyze physical and biological processes after Hurricane Nari. An strong chlorophyll a concentration enhancement up to 1 mg/m3 was observed along Naris track after the typhoons passage. After the typhoons passage, sea surface cooling were also obviously observed in the region. Cold mesoscale eddies exist during the typhoon passage. The Argo data is also used to verify a strong upwelling induced by typhoon. These responses may be triggered by upwelling and entrainment induced by strong typhoon wind. The present study suggests that one typhoon may nourish phytoplankton biomass by inducing transport of nutrient rich water from the sublayer to surface.
