Abstract :
This paper presents research accomplishments of Prof. Richard K. Moore during his “retirement” years at the University of Kansas (KU), when he led a research team that included the authors. Our collaborative research group consisted of Prof. Moore, B. Natarajakumar and V. Kurisunkal (graduate students in electrical engineering at KU), and Prof. D. Braaten (atmospheric science at KU), with the research supported by a NASA subcontract through Oregon State University (NS033A-04). Prof. Moore´s interest and knowledge of scatterometry is well known, and his research efforts during the early to mid-2000´s focused on correction methods for hydrometeors along the signal path from the satellite to/from the ocean surface. In this paper we focus on Prof. Moore´s interest in signal propagation through the atmosphere, and his contributions toward developing correction methods for scatterometer signal attenuation and backscatter caused by hydrometeors.
