Abstract :
The paper demonstrates the application of partial right eigenstructure assignment for designing a output-feedback based wide area damping controller in a power system. The unique feature of the controller is that it uses a quadratic optimization based framework for utilizing the degree of freedom provided by right eigenvectors to selectively improve the damping of poorly located modes while trying to preserve the dominant open loop behaviour of the rest of the system. The input/output signal selection for the wide area controller is based on a controllability metric. An algorithm explaining the framework and its implementation has been tested on the IEEE 68 bus test system. The results show the ability of the controller to utilize a few suitable inputs and outputs to improve the damping of selected eigenvalues with minimal impact on other eigenvalues.
