Abstract
Optical fibre sensing has been with us for almost half a century during which the technology has made important, though somewhat specialised, inroads to niche applications. This talk quickly recap the basics of fibre sensing and will then explore the applications success stories to examine what was needed to really succeed with fibre optic systems in a specific context. Thereafter it will examine the impact of new optical technologies on sensing capabilities and attempt to relate these innovations into emerging sensing needs.
