Abstract
The increasing of wind power penetration level is a significant influence on the applications of Automatic Voltage Control (AVC), which is the typical approach to fulfill the control of voltage regulation. Pilot-bus selection and the partitioning method could affect the performance of AVC in maintaining the desired voltage profile under wind fluctuation. In general, pilot-buses are selected based on a certain system operation state, and the generator response is not considered properly. Due to the dynamic and intermittent nature of wind generation, there exists a demand for improved pilot-bus selection criteria to improve the performance of AVC. This paper proposes a new approach for pilot-bus selection that realistically accounts for the physical response of generators and wind power fluctuation. A new pilot-bus-centered partitioning method is also developed based on the newly defined electrical distance representing the controllability of pilot buses to load buses. A case study based on the New England 39-bus system is provided in the paper to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches.
