  • Abstract
This paper is devoted to increasing the efficiency of utilization of wavelengths in optical fibers in modern DWDM systems. Today´s optical network architectures are very complex and consist of several layers. While the basis of all architectures is an optical DWDM layer, the implementation of the upper layer technologies can significantly vary what makes integration of the layers very challenging task. Considering that almost all traffic today is packet based and optical layer is circuit switched it is necessary to develop a sophisticated algorithms that are able to achieve optimal utilization of the optical circuit-switched infrastructure. Especially this is relevant for networks that are already deployed but have to deal with constantly growing volumes of traffic. One of the reasons for inefficient utilization of optical infrastructure is a lack of unified control plane across all network layers that is able achieve higher utilization of optical resources. For this reason we have developed a local resource distribution method that enables more effective distribution of traffic flows across the set of wavelengths of the single fiber with help of layer 2 OTN switching capabilities and transparent tunnel establishment. In order to estimate the effectiveness of the proposed method we develop an optical network simulator.
