  • Abstract
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) / International Society of Automation (ISA) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) are groups of industry professionals committed to the improvement of design, automation and control systems management across manufacturing and critical infrastructure. ISA / IEC concepts are embodied in many of the current control system products available today and are leveraged by many global manufacturers. This paper illustrates how two ISA standards can be used as valuable frameworks for the design and discussion of modern batch, discrete and continuous automation systems that integrate equipment, control and higher level business processes to produce a range of products.
