Abstract :
In order to prevent collision of the train movement or derailment, Automatic train protection (ATP) is needed as an important part of signaling system. Conventionally, a transponder or electro-magnet is used for communication between trackside device and onboard device of the ATP. ATP is not applied yet in Indonesia till now and all trains are operated by driver. So, ATP is become a necessity to protect the train operation in Indonesia. In other hand, performance of trackside equipment is also influenced by some environment problems such as heavy rain and theft of the equipment. Furthermore, some particular criteria such as low cost configuration, minimalized devices on the track, easy to maintenance, etc. have to be fulfilled by installed devices on trackside in order to solve the environment problems. We propose infrared system for automatic train protection in order to address the necessity and to meet the particular criteria. This ATP is the intermittent automatic train protection that is divided into onboard and trackside equipment. The onboard equipment consists of receiver of infrared, detecting and processing train speed, alarm and brake, detecting system error, logger, and power on self-test. The trackside equipment is formed of infrared transmitter that has function as the transducer. A cost-effective solution and ensures safety of train movement are covered by the ATP.
