Abstract :
This paper studies frequency sharing between fixed satellite services (FSS) and broadcasting satellite services (BSS) systems operating at the same frequency band. The study concentrates on estimating the required protection distances between the BSS gateway and the FSS terminals using typical elevation angles in Europe. The results show that sharing is feasible assuming a proper database approach is used. Shielding is shown to be a good method to reduce the protection distance, i.e., with the studied ITU-R path loss model the distance is reduced to 10 % from the original when 20 dB shielding is applied.
