Abstract :
The evolution of multimedia encoding techniques allows efficiently provisioning video services at different quality levels. However, resulting streams lead to different energy consumptions making it difficult to simultaneously satisfy both energy consumption and quality requirements. In order to deal with the resulting trade-off, in this paper we propose a novel joint optimization method of energy and video quality for the mobile devices. We firstly set up the energy consumption model and video quality model of video service based on scalable video coding (SVC) and the overall satisfaction is defined by a utility function to weight the energy consumption and video quality criteria. Then the joint optimization is achieved by an adaptive multimedia delivery scheme that dynamically triggers the layer switching based on the optimal set of video segments (each video segment corresponds to a quality level) we selected during the whole video reproduction. Finally, since the optimization solving mechanism is computationally expensive to be implemented in mobile devices, a heuristic algorithm is proposed. This way, significant energy consumption reduction will be achieved while keeping reasonable quality levels.
