Abstract
In this paper we conduct an intensive investigation into a recent remote collaboration support system called t-Room. This system virtually overlays a room onto other distant rooms using media data processing technologies, and it provides users in the distant rooms the sense of being in the same room. We improve t-Room by expanding its shared room space. We first introduce our own t-Room system, which consists of six sets of life-sized displays, IP cameras, and Linux-based video data transmission servers. We report the results of an experiment that found the appropriate settings of several key issues like lighting conditions and visual echo cancellation. We also discuss our idea on expanding shared room space by adopting virtualized reality-based image-editing techniques. These techniques naturally map from the two-dimensional movement of a moving object, such as a person, to an object´s one-dimensional movement in a flat display.
