Abstract :
New technologies for controlling power flow in electric networks have been developed in past few years. The new technologies are simpler, more compact and lower cost than the traditional power flow controllers such as phase shifters transformers, HVDC and FACTS devices. Such characteristics make them attractive for a variety of applications in transmission, subtransmission and distribution networks. This paper studies the use of these new power routers to increase transmission capacity and flexibility of the transmission grid, and consequently improve the utilization of the existing assets. A framework developed by Electric Power Research Institute for estimating benefits and cost of smart grid projects are used as a reference to assess the various benefits affecting different stakeholders. Two case studies performed for actual regional transmission networks of the Argentinean electric system are presented.
