Abstract :
In this letter, we derived the bit error rate (BER) of ultra-wideband (UWB) wireless communication system with transmit antenna selection and maximum ratio combining (TAS/MRC) scheme in the IEEE 802.15.3a channel model by approximating the lognormal (LN) distribution to the mixture of Gamma (MG) distributions. Transmit antenna selection scheme is able to capture many of the advantages of Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems with reduced system cost and computational complexity. Simulation and analytical results shows that TAS/MRC scheme can considerably improve the BER performance of the UWB system. This paper also presents the approximation of LN distribution in IEEE 802.15.3a UWB channel model to the MG distributions and how its parameter can be determined by applying the Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm. Closeness and accuracy of this approximation can be seen by the simulation and the mean square error (MSE) of the exact LN and approximate MG distributions.
