Abstract :
High-voltage DC (HVDC) transmission lines offer highly efficient transport of electric energy. If applied to comparatively weak grids, self-commutated converters are the proper choice, because they allow stabilizing the grid in case of faults by injecting reactive power. However, proper control methods have to be applied - normal operation and the reaction to various fault conditions need careful analysis. This becomes even more relevant if the HVDC systems runs in parallel to an HVAC system on the same overhead line tower, increasing the risk of inter-system faults. True multi-terminal functionality is also envisioned. The associated behaviour is defined by asset characteristics, which have to be evaluated carefully. This paper presents layout and structure of a test bench for the evaluation of such asset characteristics and includes first measurement results of the commissioning of the test bench.
