Abstract :
This paper deals with performance investigation of H.264/MPEG-4 video streaming, using unequal error protection (UEP) and turbo product coding (TPC) in wireless prone channels. Unequal amounts of protection are allocated to different frames (I, P and B frames) of a group-of-pictures (GOP) according to different contribution of such frames on video quality in case of error contamination. We have made a rate allocation problem, utilizing different 2-D and 3-D TPCs jointly with UEP according to a rate constraint, to find the optimum performance of H.264/MPEG-4 video transmission over prone channels. Next, we evaluated our scheme using simulations and show that unequal error protection via TPC channel coding with different code rates for different important frames in a GOP could compensate much more error contamination than equal error protection (EEP) strategies. It has also shown that TPC could be considered as a potential channel coding for video transmission with efficient performance and complexity via iterative soft-input soft-output (SISO) decoding in wireless prone channels.
