Abstract :
Experimental measurements on transient dielectric responses have shown that few materials actually follow Debye´s theory of dielectrics relaxation. The existing theoretical explanation for the deviation from Debye´s behaviour is that each material may possess a distribution of relaxation times (DRT). However, until now no physical explanation has ever been obtained for the distribution functions. Furthermore, the correspondence between a distribution function and an observed dispersion law is simply a mathematical relationship, namely, a Hilbert transformation. Another important difficulty for ORT, as well as for Debye´s theory, is that it does not account for the nonsteady-state nature of dipole interactions in the transient regime. Therefore, without an independent physical explanation of the distribution functions, an alternative theory may be needed to explain the deviation of the dielectric properties from Debye´s theory.
