Abstract
Two typical time-domain algorithms, namely, finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method and method of characteristics (MoC), are compared in the modeling of transmission lines. Both of them can provide the exact solution of a lossless transmission line when the magic time step is chosen. The relationship between them is derived and the corresponding transformation formulas are provided. Although computational complexities of the two methods are the same, the FDTD method is with higher accuracy and is more convenient to deal with lossy coupled transmission lines.
