Manufacturing system of the information era for uncertain marketplace

In the wake of the electronic commerce revolution that has accompanied the Internet and other computer technology, uncertainty in the business environment has become increasingly important in decision-making. At the same time it has become easier for companies to access current and historical data, and share it between departments. By using these data in simulation models, based on sophisticated probability analyses, manufacturers can have enhanced ability to measure and manage risk, and stand a better chance of succeeding in an increasingly competitive business environment. This paper attempts to highlight the challenges and opportunities created by IT in supply chain management (SCM). It discusses the strategies of product positioning, emphasizing the critical spots of the supply chain. Then, more specifically it addresses the acquisition problem in manufacturing in the face of uncertainty in product mixes, and technological developments with particular attention to new product evolutions
