Abstract :
The use of compact refrigerators (total volume less than 7.75 cubic feet (220 dm3)) operating for more than 20 years represents high-energy consumption mainly due to the fact that the end user only replaces his old refrigerator when it fails and can´t be repaired or, he sells it to another user. In this paper we present the energy consumption measured in lab (applying the Standard Test Method of NOM-015-ENER-2012) and field of three old compact refrigerators. Based on the results the energy consumption was between 96% and 206% higher than the maximum consumption allowed by the Official Mexican Standard. The replacement and destruction (final disposition) of this type of old refrigerators, could in 10 years, reduce up to 1,598 not generated GWh and avoided power of 50 MWs, with which stop the pollutants emission of 38 651 tons of SOx, 7 970 tons of NOx and 2 161 749 tons of CO2. The end user will obtain per unit savings of 482 kWh/year or 65 USD ($749 Mexican Pesos) per year.
