  • Abstract
In the community of electric power systems, it is always desired to perform accurate and fast simulation, especially for transient studies. This brings great challenges to electromagnetic transient program (EMTP), and demands electromagnetic transient simulators with larger scale, higher speed, lower cost, and better expansibility and functionality. This paper briefly reviews the modeling and computing methods of EMTP, and analyzes the ongoing challenges and opportunities of EMTP simulators. Later, a new electromagnetic transient simulator is designed using multiple LabVIEW FPGAs. This simulator efficiently performs electromagnetic transient simulation with nodal analysis methods or state-space analysis methods, and presents the low-cost, easily expandable, and user-friendly programming advantages.
