  • Abstract
    Phasor measurement units (PMUs) in a wide area measurement system (WAMS) environment offer precise estimates, improved post-disturbance analysis, and efficient advanced control. When communication resources are limited, WAMS data transmission network design must consider accuracy as a critical limitation. Focusing on the optimal resource allocation, this paper studies the system accuracy and its relation to transmission protocol design. An adaptive communication time division based assignment is investigated. Algorithms are developed and they are shown to achieve the optimal resource usage. Illustrative examples demonstrate significant advantages of our accuracy-based time division allocation methodologies over traditional TDMA strategy.
