Abstract :
Advancements in fiber lasers are presented. Fiber laser advantages over semiconductor lasers in optical transport are analyzed. Various schemes of actively mode-locked fiber lasers are reviewed. The physics of mode-locked semiconductor lasers and of mode-locked fiber lasers are compared. In addition, a compact fiber laser module aiming for 40 Gb/s transport system is presented. The performance of this module is discussed in detail. The challenges of high channel rate transmitter characterization are also discussed
