Abstract :
High impedance faults (HIFs) on distribution systems create unique challenges for the Power System protection engineer by not producing enough fault current to be detected by conventional overcurrent relays or fuses. This paper proposes a novel method for detecting and isolating High Impedance Faults in radial secondary distributors in a cost effective and reliable manner, by utilizing the change in voltage profile associated with its occurrence. The system is also capable of notifying the exact region of occurrence of fault to the power distribution utility. This system uses GSM (Global System for Mobiles) for communication instead of the conventional carrier line communication.
