Abstract :
This presentation describes the cost benefits of applying distributed Raman amplification, and discusses its potential in extending the reach of transparent optical networks. WDM technology also provides another significant benefit when designing and building the IP dedicated network: minimal cost wavelength channels. Cost reduction will be strongly demanded to support a reasonably priced, time-independent flat fee for network access. The common parts for the WDM point-to-point transmission system, which consists of linear repeaters, wavelength multiplexer/de-multiplexer, and pre/post optical amplifier, are shared by the wavelength-channels multiplexed into each fiber
