Abstract
Mandrel provides the desired profile to the propeller in solid propulsion technology. Mandrel of known shape is inserted before casting process. Removal of centering ring, mandrel and bottom plate after curing is highly hazardous operation known as `decoring´. Friction overload in mandrel removal may cause explosion. Similarly bottom plate removal is highly risky since the bottom plate is in close interface of the explosive material. Sudden impact on the bottom plate may again initiate explosion. These may seriously destruct infrastructure and manpower in vicinity. This paper describes the process modification and development of the remote decoring process. Crane hoisting mandrel operation using PLC and hydraulically operated bottom operation was developed for remote operation. Both the operations were programmed and interfaced to SCADA. The crane weighing system has been incorporated for online frictional load measurement and trip provision has been given for friction overload condition. The development of the automated and remote operation for enhanced safety was carried out which shall save lives and infrastructure in case of eventuality.
