Abstract
This paper presents the application of a novel symbiotic organisms search (SOS) meta-heuristic algorithm for the optimization of Real Power Loss (RPL) of a transmission system. This issue is formulated as nonlinear equality and inequality constrained optimization, with an objective function of RPL minimization. Parameters such as transformers tap settings, location, series injected voltage magnitude and phase angle of UPFC are chosen as optimization variables. SOS is a recent swarm intelligence approach motivated by the biological interactions between the organisms in an ecosystem. The proposed SOS based algorithm is experimented on New England 39 bus system for its efficiency in the optimization of the RPL. Simulation results are evaluated and is compared with existing techniques such as interior point successive linear programming (IPSLP) and Bacteria Foraging Algorithm (BFA). It is observed from the results that, the proposed algorithm is efficient in RPL minimization.
