Abstract :
Delivering an uninterrupted supply of electricity to the consumers is the foremost commitment for the electric power industries. Fault current limiters (FCL) have been a popular choice in providing the same. Various technologies have been put forward for providing an effective current suppression. But owing to various advantages like fast action and recovery, the saturated iron core superconducting fault current limiter (SISFCL) has drawn a lot of attention worldwide. Utilizing the change in permeability between saturated and unsaturated magnetic state of the core, the device is able to provide very low impedance in the normal operation and can effectively increase its impedance during fault. The magnetic nature of the core has an important role to play in the performance of the device. In this paper a comparison is made on the performance of the device with cores having different hysteresis loop utilizing the Jiles Atherton hysteresis model. The numerical model is solved using MATLAB software. Further the device is simulated in ANSYS MAXWELL 2D to support the validity of the mathematical model.
