Abstract
Presents the lasing phenomenon of amplified spontaneous emission noise in a ring network. The ring network topology includes four add-drop multiplexers. Each span of fiber between the ADMs has an erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) which compensates for the losses incurred in the fiber and different ADM components. The results demonstrate the evolution of noise buildup and the effect of variable optical attenuators in closed cycle lasing.
