Abstract
In this paper, a step-shaped field coil for large capacity superconducting motors application is investigated. As compared to a conventional rectangular cross-sectional shaped field coil, the step-shaped one can obtain the same air gap magnetic field intensity at a target point located at symmetry axis of field coil with reduced HTS tape consumption, and it also improves the critical current significantly. In addition, the characteristic of the different gaps between two adjacent coil layers is also analyzed.
