Abstract :
Two previous papers by Essex reported the voltage endurance of film coated magnet wire in air. Other work has been done on voltage endurance of film coated magnet wire in a conductive water solution. Quite unlike the failure mechanism found in a non-conductive gaseous atmosphere where there is no current leakage thru the film until the corona start voltage level is reached (around 200 volts per mil.), we find that failure occurs in a film immersed in a conductive solution at much lower voltage levels. This is due to the continuous current leakage thru the film.
