Abstract
Recent developments in irradiation technology have resulted in new cross-linked polyolefin insulations with both greater high temperature capabilities and superior flame resistance. Depending on the formulation these new materials will last from three to ten times longer at rated temperature than the traditional cross-linked polyethylenes. These new insulations provide better flame retardancy than previously was thought possible for a polyolefin insulation system. Many of these irradiation cross-linked polyolefins are now being used in industrial, utility and transportation applications with excellent results.
