Abstract
Naphthene-base oils have generally been used for impregnation of transformers, but there is a distinct possibility that the demand for these oils will exceed the supply by the end of the century. The most realistic alternatives seem to be the paraffinic insulating oils. This paper reports a thermal aging study of a paraffin-base transformer oil, as compared with a proven naphthene-base oil. A method for evaluating the degradation of oils has been established and used to assess both the paraffinic and the naphthenic oils, particularly with respect to the influence of the aging temperature.
