Abstract :
A low cost and small form factor 8×10G optical transmission system based on digital-wrapper technology is proposed and developed. This device can be used for typical Point to Point transmission or metro WDM ring application, it can also be flexibly configured for a Point to Multi Points (P2MP) application for access network. When it is used for P2MP application, 2 bytes GCC0 of Optical Transport Network (OTN) overhead are used to transparently transport network management message by the High speed Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and digital wrapper chip, so that the in-band network management information is embedded with the real traffic for the long distance transmission. The most important thing is that at the HUB node up to 8 link OTN overhead can be in parallel processed by the FPGA, which can simultaneously support multiple in-band network management from Hub location to up to 8 different remote nodes. In addition, the forward error correction (FEC) is developed, and it is effectively evaluated in terms of network performances such as the receiver sensitivity, the dispersion penalty, and optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) tolerance/improvement by the FEC. The long term error free transmission test has also been conducted for the 160 km single mode fiber and over 24 hours.
