Abstract :
To resolve the problem of urban traffic congestion, we designed an intelligent system which can monitor urban traffic congestion in real time through wireless sensor networks and provide an optimized solution using a global path planning algorithm. Firstly, we design a smart device with sensor to calculate the flow of vehicles, which is mainly installed in the crash barrier along the road. These sensor nodes construct a local multi-hop wireless sensor network communicating with 802.11.15.4/Zigbee protocol. Sensor nodes collect information of measured objects, then send the sensed data to the local sink node to realize information collection of local area. Sink nodes aggregate the information and transmit to the data center by long-distance wireless communication, so as to collect the roads´ comprehensive information covering the whole city. Using these real-time updating data, combining with other electronic traffic data, we proposed an optimal path planning algorithm based on traffic real-time condition and road capability. System statistics and analysis results can be accessed through the App and Web terminals. Car drivers can get the information of road congestion on time and get real-time and dynamic route navigation through the system, at the same time the municipal traffic authority can acquire the global traffic information of the city so that to make timely responses and take some improved traffic measure by analyzing the long-term characteristics of traffic data.
