Abstract :
An (RTU) Remote Terminal Unit is a standalone data acquisition and control unit which is used to process analog and digital signals like voltage, signal inputs from thermocouple, leak detector which sends digitized data packets over Ethernet to the near Local Control Centre (LCC) and generates control outputs. This RTU generally works on harsh environment so the processor inside the RTU is susceptible to random faults. If the processor fails the process being monitored by it becomes inaccessible. This Fault Tolerant Processor scheme untangle the Remote Control Unit failure issue according to this scheme each Remote Control Unit will have two processing elements by using two processor in same RTU. So it can act as a Fault Tolerant Processor remote control unit.
