Abstract :
A novel magnet design strategy allows normal conductor resistive coils to operate in intense radiation zones of a DT fusion reactor. Solid insulation is replaced by a combination of highly resistive solid metal and flowing liquid or gaseous coolant behaving as a lossy insulator. Unwanted effects include increased heat dissipation and additional stray magnetic fields, but these can be managed to acceptable levels through optimization.
