Abstract :
A novel 2×1 microstrip array antenna consisting of two rectangular radiating patches, which are electromagnetically coupled to the microstrip line is reported. A tapered arrow head dumb-bell shaped slot is embedded in the ground plane to enhance the coupling to the patches. By introducing proper asymmetry in the structure in the form of slits placed at different distances from the edges of the corresponding radiating patch element the antenna is realized for dual band operation. The antenna is providing resonance at two frequencies of 1.8 GHz and 2.78 GHz with good gain. Circular polarization is achieved in the lower band due to the combined effect of asymmetry slits and corner truncation of both the radiating patches. The simulated results are in good agreement with the measured ones.
