Abstract
A time domain equalizer (TEQ) is used in discrete multitone (DMT) transceivers in order to reduce the duration of the overall response of the transmission system, so that a shorter length cyclic prefix could be used. The optimum TEQ is the one that results in maximum bit allocation to each block of DMT. Al-Dhahir and Cioffi (1996) have proposed an optimization scheme which can achieve this goal under certain conditions. This scheme is rather involved and thus its implementation in an on-line system is not feasible. In this paper, we present a novel approach which results in TEQ designs with comparable performance to those of Al-Dhahir and Cioffi, but at a very affordable computational cost.
