Abstract :
The electron transitions between the orbital p and s states subjected to the simultaneous action of the spin-orbit splitting, and the applied magnetic and exchange fields are analyzed. The data are employed in the evaluation of the applied magnetic field and spin-orbit splitting effects of the spectra of the off-diagonal element of the optical susceptibility tensor. The results give a correct description of the trends observed in the Faraday rotation of Y/sub 3/Fe/sub 5/O/sub 12/ at high magnetic fields. An interpretation of the Bi effect in iron garnets on the magnetooptical effects is proposed.
