Abstract :
The polar Kerr rotation and ellipticity and the effect of birefringence in YFeO3are studied by means of reflection ellipsometry. The data are employed in obtaining the permittivity tensor element spectra in YFeO3. It is shown that in orthoferrites the transitions which involve 3d electrons of Fe3+give important contributions to the birefringence observed in transmission.
