Abstract :
An experimental study of formative times and the Topler´s constant approach to modeling the breakdown event is presented. The authors deal with the dependence of formative time and Topler´s constant on the macroscopic parameters of the insulation. Results obtained were statistically treated and the Topler´s constant dependence on the quoted parameters was determined. It was found that some insulator parameters (gas type, pressure, degree of inhomogeneity of electrical field) influenced the value of Topler´s constant, and that some other insulator parameters (electrode material, roughness of electrode surface) did not influence the value of Topler´s constant. The observed influence of insulator parameters on the value of Topler´s constant was not quantitatively significant. On the basis of the experimental results one can conclude that it is valid to apply Topler´s law in modeling the electrical breakdown for SF/sub 6/ and gas mixtures SF/sub 6//N/sub 2/, SF/sub 6//Ar under the tested conditions.
