Abstract
This comprehensive text on signal theory forms a most useful reference work on waveform coding and its deployment in speech processing for high-fidelity or low-bit-rate transmission and also low-bit-rate image transmission. In this aspect, the text summarises the extensive progress which has been made in waveform coding over the last two decades. The theory behind these developments is clearly developed in a coherent manner, and the implementation and relevance of different approaches are compared. Thus the text brings together the material from many diverse papers in the information theory, communications and signal processing literature.
